Volkswagen Golf R History
There are a lot of exciting options in the new Volkswagen lineup for drivers in Moose Jaw and Southey right now at Knight Auto Haus Volkswagen, but there’s nothing else quite like the new Volkswagen Golf R. This hot hatch delivers commanding performance and head-turning design and builds on a history of successful renditions.
2008 Volkswagen Golf R to 2017 Volkswagen Golf R
The predecessor to the VW Golf R was the Volkswagen 32, a 2-door hatchback that had both 2004 and 2008 variants. The most recent rendition came with a 3.2L V6 engine and 4MOTION® AWD, as well as the dual-clutch DSG® transmission.
First Generation VW Golf R
The Golf R debuted in the 2012 model year and rant until 2013. Powering this model was a turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that made 256 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque and came mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Standard features on this sport hatch included amenities like leather upholstery, heated seats, a power sunroof, and dual-zone automatic climate control, as well as modern tech like a navigation system and Bluetooth®.
Second Generation VW Golf R
The Golf R took a year off in 2014 and returned as a redesigned model for the 2015 model year. In addition to offering up more space for passengers and cargo, the redesigned model also develops more power from its turbocharged inline-4, which generates 290 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. Other performance features include sport seats and an available adaptive suspension with different ride settings ranging from comfort to sport orientations. The 2016 VW Golf R was named a “2016 All-Star” by Automobile Magazine.
2018 Volkswagen Golf R
In addition to a 2.0L TSI® engine that develops 292 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, the 2018 Volkswagen Golf returns to the lineup with a number of exciting updates this year, including:
- New 7-speed DSG® automatic transmission with Tiptronic® and Sport mode
- New 19-inch wheel design
